Gourmet Travellers - Bar of the Year 2010: Gerald’s Bar, Melbourne - Sept. 2009
Gerald Diffey has worked at and with some of Victoria’s great names – Karen Martini, Rita Macali, Tansy Good and Stefano de Pieri among them – and has spread his affable charm wherever he’s appeared. But it’s at his small bar in Rathdowne Street, Carlton, propped next door to the pizza cacophony that is La Porchetta, that he seems to have distilled all that experience into one idiosyncratic, unique and thoroughly enjoyable package. "New year, new beer" by Greg Thom

"The importers of Otaru went to great lengths to source this unusual beer from a remote Japanese fishing village of the same name.

The beer is the first to be imported by Boutique Alpine Brews, a new venture established to put niche beers from alpine regions around the world in the hands of Australian drinkers.

A European-inspired pilsner style, the 5 per cent Otaru Export was originally developed for distribution from the village brewery to nearby Tokyo and has previously been unavailable outside of Japan.

Using local water considered by centuries of seafarers to be the purest of any port in Japan, this beautiful beer has a highly distinctive aroma and a taste that conjures images of pear and almonds."

The management and staff of Boutique Alpine Brews would like to invite all of you to launch our first Boutique Alpine Brew – ‘Otaru Export’. Transport Hotel – Federation Square, Tuesday December 18th from 6:30pm.

After several months of painstaking planning (at times boring all of you to tears), our first container of Boutique Alpine Beer – Otaru Export has arrived.

We are now frantically pushing it out through our distribution channels, hopefully to a bar/resturant.cafe/bottleshop near you soon.

Last Tuesday Otaru was featured in The Age Epicure (Page 22) by renowned beer writer (what a terrible job that must be!) Willie Simpson.

Bending Willie’s words a little :
"it's a beer that cannot be missed!!!"

Other comments back from drinkers so far have been:
"wow, a Japanese beer that has some flavour"
"A Japanese beer that isn’t bottled in Abbotsford!"
