Stranahan’s, the first Colorado-born whiskey, is dedicated to making the smoothest, most distinctively-flavored whiskey on the market using hand-crafted distilling techniques and Colorado’s finest natural ingredients.
The Story
January 2009 presented an opportunity to travel to Aspen, Colorado which was a truly great place to ski. I was also excited about the prospect of meeting up with Jess Graber, the owner and founder of Stranahans Colorado Whiskey. Jess had put in what sounded like a lifetime of work to develop a Whiskey that was smooth enough to be at least a 12-15 year old malt from deep in the highlands of Scotland. Instead though it is distilled in his purpose built and unique still in Denver, just down the road from his home on the outskirts of Aspen.
We met and shared whiskey/beer stories and the love we both share in challenging the large commercial brewers and distillers. We both recognise that there is a growing community of drinkers who are increasingly aware of the opportunity to drink high quality products. After a tipple of neat Stranahans Colorado Whiskey I knew our BABs customers back in Melbourne and beyond would love this as much as I did, and so we searched for the necessary logistics to get a small order here.
Jess and his team have been great, I would recommend any and all who travel nearby to Aspen or Denver take a moment to look him and his team up. The spirit of this frontier spirit maker is indelible.
Now it is not just this author, nor is it Jess and his team’s opinion, but in fact the Whiskey Bible Author - Jim Murray, sings the praises of Stranahans Colorado Whiskey, awarding it 2009 Best Small Batch Distillery Whisky of the Year. In the commentary Mr Jim Murray doesn’t hold back, an excert from page 280 of this years Whisky Bible “incredible... Possibly a world first in the history of a distillery. A faultless - and I mean absolutely perfect - nose for their first ever bottling. I’ve certainly never known it and will be surprised if I see it again in my lifetime. Here the honey ranges through acacia to burntish honeycomb via Manuca.”
Need we say any more, it is a drink for the ages and it is here now!
Available today at fine establishments like Geralds Bar, Rathdowne Street, Carlton North
